First, what is a repairable write-off?
It's a vehicle an insurer has assessed as uneconomical to repair at the time, but which is allowed to be repaired and re-registered. It's recorded on the Written-Off Vehicles Register (WOVR). Once it's properly repaired, you can apply to get it registered again - but only after it passes the checks below.
The two things every write-off needs
To re-register a repairable write-off in Queensland you need both of these, and you need them in the right order:
- A current Queensland Safety Certificate (roadworthy) - confirms the car is safe and roadworthy.
- A Written-Off Vehicle Inspection (WOVI) - an identity check that confirms the car is legitimate and hasn't been rebuilt with stolen parts.
Your Safety Certificate must be current when you present the car for the WOVI (a safety certificate is valid for 2 months, or 3 months if issued to a licensed dealer).
Step by step
Gather your paperwork (keep the originals)
The WOVI is strict on documentation and only accepts originals - no photocopies or scans. Keep everything from the repair. You'll generally need:
- Proof you bought the vehicle (showing make, model, VIN and full seller details)
- A repair invoice from a licensed repairer listing all parts, labour and the VINs of any donor vehicles used
- Original receipts for all major parts used in the repair
- A completed QLD statutory declaration about the repairs
- Your driver licence or Customer Reference Number (CRN)
Get your Safety Certificate - we come to you
This is where we help directly. As a QLD Approved Inspection Station, we issue your Safety Certificate at your home, work or workshop across Brisbane - no need to drive the car in. We can do this once the repairs are complete and the car is roadworthy.
Book and pass your WOVI
The WOVI (identity/anti-theft inspection) is carried out at a Transport and Main Roads authorised WOVI inspection station - it's a separate booking, and a government fee applies (around $480+ for a passenger vehicle, set by TMR). Bring your current Safety Certificate and all original documents. Book ahead, as these inspections fill up.
How Mobile Roadworthy Direct helps you pass first time
The WOVI can be knocked back over small things - missing paperwork, an out-of-date safety certificate, or an issue that should've been picked up earlier. We take the stress out of it:
- โ Safety Certificate, mobile - issued at your location once repairs are done.
- โ Pre-inspection readiness check - we go over the car so there are no surprises before your WOVI.
- โ Paperwork sense-check - we help you make sure you're walking in with everything the inspector needs.
- โ Straight advice - if something needs fixing first, we'll tell you honestly before you pay for the WOVI.
Give us a call and we'll talk you through your specific vehicle.
Quick tips to pass
- Keep every receipt and invoice from day one of the repair - originals only.
- Use a licensed repairer and make sure the invoice lists parts, labour and donor VINs.
- Get your Safety Certificate close to your WOVI date so it's still current.
- Don't over-strip the car - vehicles where only a minor portion of the original remains (or a cabin swapped onto a different chassis) may not pass.
- Book your WOVI early and turn up with the car clean and all documents in order.
